Average Calculator
Find the mean, median, mode and range of your numbers. Compare the centre of a dataset with its smallest and largest values.
Mean
Accepts comma or whitespace separated finite numbers. Sample deviation requires at least two values.

How this calculator works
The mean uses every value, while the median uses the ordered middle and is less influenced by extreme values. The mode identifies the most frequent values and can have several answers. The range shows the distance between the lowest and highest values. These statistics describe different features of the same dataset.
Formula
Mean = sum of values / count. Median = middle ordered value (or average of the middle pair). Mode = most frequent value(s). Range = maximum − minimum.
Assumptions & limitations
Accepts comma or whitespace separated finite numbers. Sample deviation requires at least two values.

Worked example
For 2, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 7, 9, the sum is 40 across 8 values, so the mean is 5. The middle pair is 4 and 5, giving a median of 4.5. The mode is 4 and the range is 9 − 2 = 7.
A mean alone does not show how dispersed the values are. Use the Standard Deviation Calculator on the same dataset to measure spread.
Our approach to calculations ↗Common questions
Which average is less affected by outliers?
The median depends on the ordered middle values, so extreme values can affect it less than the arithmetic mean.
Can there be more than one mode?
Yes. All values tied for the highest frequency are listed. If every value occurs once, the tool reports no mode.
How should I separate numbers?
Use commas or whitespace, with a dot for a decimal point. Commas separate observations rather than marking decimal fractions.
