BEHIND THE NUMBERS

Calculation and editorial methodology

We distinguish mathematical results from estimates about the real world. Converting bits to bytes is a unit conversion. Predicting a download time also requires assumptions about sustained network speed. Each calculator states the model it uses.

Formula and example checks

Our internal checks compare results with known examples, test valid input boundaries and reject unsupported cases such as division by zero or a debt payment that cannot reduce the balance. A formula-check date refers to this internal process, not an external expert review or a guarantee that every possible case is correct.

Units and rounding

Storage calculations use decimal units: one GB is 1,000 MB, and one byte contains eight bits. Binary units such as GiB represent different quantities. Calculations retain numerical precision until presentation; tables may round results for readability. Transfer durations round up to a whole second. Whole-file capacity rounds down so partial files are not counted.

Technology estimates

Transfer tools compare theoretical bandwidth with an adjustable usable-speed percentage. The default 85% is illustrative, not a measured expectation. Electricity costs use entered power, time and energy price. PSU and UPS calculations remain planning estimates that need manufacturer-specific checks.

Financial models

Loans use fixed-rate monthly amortization. Optional extra payments reduce the balance; housing costs and financed fees are included only where the tool accepts those inputs. Savings tools use the stated compounding and deposit timing; compound interest allows beginning- or end-of-month deposits. Assumed returns are scenarios, not forecasts. Tax, inflation and fees are excluded unless explicitly provided for.

Sources and editorial review

Reference links support unit definitions and mathematical background. They do not certify this website or endorse its results. Tools pending further validation are marked to stay out of search indexing. We update review dates when the corresponding material is checked, rather than automatically on every site build.
