How this calculator works
A finite decimal can be expressed over a power of ten, then simplified. For example, 0.75 becomes 75/100 and reduces to 3/4. This tool supports up to six decimal places. Entering an approximation such as 0.333333 gives that finite fraction, not the repeating value exactly equal to 1/3.
Formula
decimal × 10^digits / 10^digits, then simplify
Assumptions & limitations

Worked example
0.75 = 3/4.

Our approach to calculations ↗Common questions
Will 0.333333 become exactly 1/3?
No. It represents the finite decimal 333333/1000000. An infinitely repeating decimal is a different exact value.
How many decimal places are supported?
Up to six, so the numerator and denominator can be represented and reduced reliably within the tool’s supported range.
Why is the denominator a power of ten?
Each finite decimal place contributes a factor of ten. The resulting fraction is then reduced.
