Scientific Calculator

Evaluate arithmetic, powers, roots, logarithms and trigonometric expressions with explicit degree or radian mode.

YOUR NUMBERS

Use * for multiplication and ^ for powers. Functions: sqrt, cbrt, log (base 10), ln, sin, cos, tan, abs. Constants: pi or π, e.

Type expressions directly. Enter calculates; use Tab and Enter to operate the keypad.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculator works

Type an expression or insert tokens using the keypad. Parentheses group terms; powers bind before multiplication/division, which bind before addition/subtraction. Powers associate right to left: 2^3^2 means 2^(3^2). Unary minus is applied outside an unparenthesized power, so −2^2 means −4. Functions require parentheses and multiplication must be explicit, such as 2*pi. Calculations use a bounded arithmetic parser rather than JavaScript evaluation.

Formula

Operators: +, −, ×, ÷, ^. log(x) = log base 10; ln(x) = natural log; sqrt(x) = square root; cbrt(x) = real cube root. In degree mode, trigonometric arguments are multiplied by π/180 before evaluation.

Assumptions & limitations

Real-number calculations only; ordinary floating-point precision. Logs require positive arguments, square roots nonnegative arguments and division a nonzero divisor. Expression length, nesting and magnitude are limited for predictable local execution.

Worked example

sqrt(9)+2^3 gives 3+8 = 11. In degree mode, sin(30) = 0.5. In radian mode, sin(pi/6) gives the same result. ln(e) = 1.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Why does −2^2 return −4?

Exponentiation takes precedence over unary minus. Use (−2)^2 for a squared negative base, which gives 4.

Can I type 2π without a multiplication sign?

Use 2*pi or 2*π. Explicit multiplication avoids ambiguous expressions.

What is the difference between log and ln?

log uses base 10 and ln uses the natural base e. Use Logarithm for another positive base.

Are complex numbers supported?

No. Operations without a supported real result show an explanation instead of NaN or an invented complex value.
