BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculator works

A ten-payment schedule spreads the same annual bill across fewer months than a twelve-payment schedule. Lower individual payments do not reduce the tax due. Enter the amount on your bill after discounts or reductions already confirmed by the council. The calculator does not look up valuation bands, assess eligibility for discounts or set payment dates. Actual council instalments can differ because of billing changes, arrears or rounding.

Formula and rules

Ten-instalment amount = annual bill / 10. Twelve-instalment amount = annual bill / 12. Difference per payment = bill / 10 − bill / 12.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Do twelve instalments save Council Tax?

No. They change payment timing and size, not the entered annual liability.

Does this find my council or valuation band?

No. Use your council’s actual bill. Local rates, discounts and eligibility are not inferred.

Can I use it for Northern Ireland domestic rates?

No. This page is for Council Tax instalments in Great Britain. Northern Ireland uses a different domestic-rates system.
