Estimated taxable Social Security benefits
Single or married filing jointly, with positive net benefits and other worksheet income already established. No married-separate rules, lump-sum election, foreign income exclusions, railroad benefit treatment, negative benefit adjustments or automatic tax-return deduction/credit reconstruction.

How this calculator works
Provisional income combines other worksheet income, relevant tax-exempt interest and half of net Social Security benefits. For supported single filers, the inclusion thresholds are $25,000 and $34,000; jointly they are $32,000 and $44,000. The first interval can include up to half of benefits. Above the second threshold, the worksheet can include up to 85%, subject to its capped formula. The result is an income inclusion amount; apply income-tax rules separately to determine tax owed.
Formula and rules
Provisional income = other worksheet income + tax-exempt interest + 50% of net benefits. Above the upper threshold: taxable benefits = min(85% of benefits, 85% of excess + min(50% of benefits, 50% of threshold interval)).

Worked example
A single filer with $24,000 benefits and $25,000 other worksheet income has $37,000 provisional income. The taxable portion is $4,500 plus 85% of the $3,000 above $34,000, totaling $7,050.

Common questions
Is this the same as employee Social Security tax?
No. FICA taxes covered wages. This calculator estimates how much retirement benefit income enters a federal income-tax calculation.
Does 85% taxable mean an 85% tax rate?
No. It means up to 85% of benefits can be included in taxable income. Applicable income-tax rates are applied afterward.
Why does tax-exempt interest matter?
Relevant tax-exempt interest contributes to provisional income even though that interest is not directly taxed under ordinary federal income-tax rules.
