How this calculator works
The bill already includes any entered tax. Calculate the tip on either the full bill or the bill minus that tax, then split bill plus tip equally. Each share is rounded down to cents and the remaining amount is displayed so the group can settle it separately.
Formula
Tip = selected bill basis × tip percentage / 100. Total = full bill + tip. Equal share = total / people, rounded down to cents; the remainder is settled separately.

Worked example
An $80 bill with an 18% tip adds $14.40, giving $94.40 total or $47.20 each for two people. If that same bill includes $8 tax and you select the before-tax basis, the tip is 18% of $72 = $12.96, giving $46.48 each.

How do I tip before tax?
Enter a bill that already includes tax, enter that included tax amount, then select Bill before entered tax. The tax is not added twice.
Is the split always exact to the cent?
Not always. The remainder shows what is left after everyone pays the equal share rounded down to cents; allocate that small remainder to one person.
Does the tool assume a customary tip?
No. The presets are shortcuts only. Choose your own percentage; local customs and service charges differ.
