How this calculator works
The count is rounded down because a partial file does not fit. Remaining capacity is what is left after storing that whole-file count. Advertised drive capacity uses decimal units, while some operating systems display binary units. System files and formatting reduce usable space, so use available capacity when precision matters.
Formula
files = floor(capacity GB / file size GB)
Assumptions & limitations
Decimal capacity. Filesystem, operating system and reserved space are not deducted.

Worked example
A 1 TB drive fits 20 files of 50 GB before overhead.
For a recording archive, estimate the average file size with the Video File Size Calculator before comparing it with available drive space.
Our approach to calculations ↗Common questions
Why does a 1 TB drive look smaller in my operating system?
Manufacturers use decimal capacity while some systems display binary multiples. Formatting and system files also reduce available space.
Does the tool count partial files?
No. The count is rounded down; remaining capacity is shown after storing that whole number of files.
Should I use total or free capacity?
Use free capacity when files or an operating system already occupy the drive.
