Streaming Data Usage Calculator
Estimate how much data streaming uses per hour and over your viewing schedule. Compare a sustained bitrate with your monthly data allowance.
Data per hour
Presets approximate 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 4K. Providers and compression vary; overhead is excluded.

How this calculator works
A sustained bitrate determines how much data a stream transfers over time. The presets are illustrative starting points, not provider-specific guarantees. Adaptive streaming changes bitrate with connection quality and scene complexity. Multiply the hourly estimate by your actual viewing schedule to compare data plans.
Formula
GB per hour = Mbps × 3,600 / 8,000
Assumptions & limitations

Worked example
5 Mbps uses 2.25 GB per hour.
For a single recorded stream rather than a monthly allowance, use the Video File Size Calculator with its duration and average bitrate.
Our approach to calculations ↗Common questions
Are the quality presets provider guarantees?
No. They are illustrative bitrates for comparison. Codecs, providers and adaptive streaming can use different rates.
Is the estimate for downloading or broadcasting?
It estimates data transferred at a sustained bitrate in either direction. Enter the bitrate for the stream you receive or send.
What counts toward monthly usage?
Bitrate times viewing hours times days. Additional streams, app traffic and protocol overhead are not included.
