BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculator works

UK income-contingent repayments depend on earnings above the threshold for your plan, not simply loan balance and interest. The undergraduate model uses 9% of the excess; a postgraduate loan uses 6% over its own threshold and can run alongside it. Supply the relevant earnings after any applicable salary sacrifice. This annualised calculation does not round individual payroll deductions down to whole pounds or track a remaining loan balance.

Formula and rules

Undergraduate estimate = max(0, earnings − selected plan threshold) × 9%. Postgraduate estimate = max(0, earnings − 21,000) × 6%. Annualised total is their sum.

Assumptions and limitations

One undergraduate plan, optionally a postgraduate loan, ordinary UK repayment-relevant salary and current-year thresholds. No overseas thresholds, multiple undergraduate-plan allocation, self-assessment adjustments, loan payoff stop, write-off date or pay-period rounding. The entered income is not reduced by a net-pay pension.

Worked example

At £40,000 repayment-relevant salary, Plan 2 uses its £29,385 threshold: £10,615 × 9% = £955.35 annually. Adding a postgraduate loan contributes £19,000 × 6% = £1,140, for a £2,095.35 combined annualised estimate.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Does the balance determine this payment?

Not in the income-contingent model. Earnings, repayment plan and applicable thresholds determine the ordinary deduction until the loan is repaid or another stopping rule applies.

Can undergraduate and postgraduate deductions run together?

Yes. The optional postgraduate calculation is added separately to the selected undergraduate plan.

Can I use this to decide when my loan is written off?

No. The calculator does not model remaining debt, interest, repayment history or write-off eligibility. It estimates current-year earnings deductions.
