Upload Time Calculator

Estimate how long a video, file or backup takes to upload. Use your upload speed and adjust the usable bandwidth for a realistic planning scenario.

YOUR NUMBERS
Real-world assumptions

85% is an illustrative scenario. Use a measured proportion if available.

Decimal units: 1 GB = 1,000 MB; 1 byte = 8 bits. The theoretical time uses the full entered speed. The estimate uses your usable-speed percentage; neither includes installation time.

How long does it take to upload 10 GB?

Decimal 10 GB using upload bandwidth, not your advertised download rate. The estimate uses 85% throughput and excludes service-side processing.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculator works

Use your upload speed rather than the headline download rate. Many residential connections are asymmetric. Uploading backups or video may also be limited by the receiving service. If other devices share the connection, enter the bandwidth available to this upload for a more realistic result.

Formula

seconds = size in bytes × 8 / bits per second

Assumptions & limitations

Decimal units: 1 GB = 1,000 MB; 1 byte = 8 bits. The theoretical time uses the full entered speed. The estimate uses your usable-speed percentage; neither includes installation time.

Worked example

A 5 GB video contains 40,000 megabits. At a sustained upload speed of 20 Mbps, the theoretical transfer takes 2,000 seconds, or 33 minutes 20 seconds. At 85% usable bandwidth it takes about 39 minutes 13 seconds.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common questions

Which speed should I enter?

Use upload speed, ideally a sustained measured value. A connection’s advertised download speed can be much higher.

Does cloud storage limit upload speed?

It can. The slower of your available upload connection and the service’s receiving rate constrains the transfer.

Can I estimate a backup folder?

Enter the total size transferred. Deduplication, compression and changed-file-only backups may transfer less than the full folder size.
