Scale usedYour editable letter-to-point scale; verify with your school

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculator works

Multiply the grade points for each course by its credits, then divide the total points by the total credits. This gives more weight to longer courses. Previous cumulative points can be included using a prior GPA and its completed credits. Edit the letter scale to match your institution; GPA systems and rounding rules are not universal.

Formula

GPA = (Σ course grade points × credits + prior GPA × prior credits) / total included credits.

Assumptions & limitations

Positive numeric course credits and a user-confirmed letter-to-points scale. Default A+ and A both equal 4.0. Pass/fail and withdrawn courses should be excluded unless your school assigns grade points. This is not an official transcript calculation.

Worked example

An A in a 3-credit course contributes 12 points; a B in another 3-credit course contributes 9. Total points 21 divided by 6 credits gives GPA 3.5.

Common questions

Can I change the GPA scale?

Yes. Expand the grade-scale options and enter your school’s points for each letter.

How do I include my current GPA?

Enter both the previous GPA and the credits it represents. A GPA without its credit total cannot be weighted correctly.

Should I include pass/fail courses?

Only if your school awards grade points for them. Otherwise omit them from the calculation.
