A LITTLE CLARITY

Weighted average of entered work

86%

TreatmentEntered weights are normalised; ungraded work is excluded

Scores and targets use a 0–100 percentage scale. Final mode assumes the current grade describes all non-final work. The final’s weight must be greater than zero. School-specific rounding, extra credit and minimum-pass rules are excluded.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How this calculator works

Weighted course mode averages the work entered, normalising by its combined weight. Final exam mode solves the remaining weighted equation for a target overall grade. A required score above 100 is reported directly rather than hidden; a negative score means the target is already reached even at zero on the final.

Formula

Weighted grade = Σ(score × weight) / Σ weights. Final needed = (target − current × (1 − final fraction)) / final fraction.

Assumptions & limitations

Scores and targets use a 0–100 percentage scale. Final mode assumes the current grade describes all non-final work. The final’s weight must be greater than zero. School-specific rounding, extra credit and minimum-pass rules are excluded.

Worked example

Scores of 80 and 90 with weights 40 and 60 give 86%. A current 80 with a final worth 20% requires 105% on the final to reach 85%, so the target exceeds a normal 100-point maximum.

Common questions

Must weights add up to 100?

Not in the graded-work mode: the entered weights are normalised. This can show the average so far without treating missing assignments as zero.

Why is the required final score above 100?

The entered target cannot be reached on a standard 0–100 final under those weights. Check the inputs or your school’s extra-credit policy.

Is this a GPA calculator?

No. This tool combines percentage scores. GPA translates letters to grade points and weights those points by course credits.
