Work Hours Calculator
Add up work hours from start and end times, minus unpaid lunch breaks, across one or several shifts, including overnight shifts. Get hours and decimal hours.
Net work time (hours:minutes)
Up to 31 shifts, each shorter than 24 hours. Clock times are local wall-clock entries: daylight-saving changes are not inferred. Breaks must be whole minutes no greater than the shift. This tool counts time and does not determine overtime entitlement or pay.

How this calculator works
For each shift, subtract the start from the end and remove the unpaid break. If the end is earlier than the start, the shift crosses midnight once. Equal start and end times represent zero hours, not a full day. Add or subtract mode instead combines durations without a clock or timezone.
Formula
Net minutes = sum((end − start, plus 1,440 if overnight) − unpaid break). Decimal hours = net minutes / 60.

- Date and UTC calendar methods ↗
Calendar arithmetic uses UTC date boundaries, not local elapsed hours.
Worked example
09:00 to 17:00 less a 30-minute break gives 7:30, or 7.5 decimal hours. A 22:00–06:00 shift less 30 minutes also gives 7.5 hours.

Common questions
Is 7:30 the same as 7.30 hours?
No. Thirty minutes is half an hour, so 7:30 equals 7.5 decimal hours.
Can a shift cross midnight?
Yes. An end time earlier than the start is interpreted as the following day, with one midnight crossing.
Does this calculate overtime pay?
No. After totalling your work time, use an overtime or hourly-pay calculator with the applicable pay assumptions.
